Welcome to AnoSTEP-Afrika

AnoSTEP-Afrika is a collaborative, multicountry, multi-disciplinary project focused on understanding the distribution, behavior, and impact of Anopheles stephensi, a growing threat to malaria control in Africa. This project, conducted in collaboration with four African institutes and other partners aims to understand the contribution of An. stephensi to malaria transmission relative to native malaria vectors across a range of ecological zones spanning rural, peri-urban, and urban epidemiological settings in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Nigeria, to pinpoint factors driving invasion.

Who is An.stephensi

Anopheles stephensi is a mosquito species that can transmit malaria parasites to humans. Unlike most African malaria vectors that mainly thrive in rural or semi-rural settings, An. stephensi is highly adapted to urban environments. It breeds in artificial water containers such as barrels, tanks, and discarded containers places common in cities and towns.

Our Activities

Kick-off Meeting

As the coordinating lead, the Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) hosted a Project Kick-Off Meeting in February 2025 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, bringing together all country partners in person, with colleagues from Lancaster and Sanger joining virtually.

VBDs360 Training

Training on the platfrom VBDs 360 was done for the Kenya team. VBDs360 is an entomological surveillance used for the collection, analysis and storage of vector data..

Data Collection

Larvae collection is being done at the specified sentinel sites in Kenya. Collection was done in Turkana County.
