Bringing Together Multicountry Partners to Tackle the Emerging Malaria Vector Threat

Welcome to AnoSTEP-Afrika

AnoSTEP-Afrika is a collaborative, multicountry, multi-disciplinary project focused on understanding the distribution, behavior, and impact of Anopheles stephensi, a growing threat to malaria control in Africa. This project, conducted in collaboration with four African institutes and other partners aims to understand the contribution of An. stephensi to malaria transmission relative to native malaria vectors across a range of ecological zones spanning rural, peri-urban, and urban epidemiological settings in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Nigeria, to pinpoint factors driving invasion.

What is An. stephensi ?

Anopheles stephensi is a mosquito species that can transmit malaria parasites to humans. Unlike most African malaria vectors that mainly thrive in rural or semi-rural settings, An. stephensi is highly adapted to urban environments. It breeds in artificial water containers such as barrels, tanks, and discarded containers places common in cities and towns.

Our Mission

To generate robust, actionable evidence on the biology, ecology and public-health impact of Anopheles stephensi across Africa to inform targeted surveillance and vector-control strategies.

Our Vision

A future where regional capacity, targeted surveillance, and evidence-based control measures prevent An. stephensi and other invasive vectors from reversing progress against malaria safeguarding urban and rural populations across Africa.

Our Core Values

Evidence-Driven Research

We ground every activity in rigorous, data-driven science. By combining field entomology, epidemiological studies, and advanced analytics, we generate reliable evidence that informs effective and sustainable malaria-control strategies.

Regional Partnership & Capacity

We believe African scientists and institutions must lead Africa’s response to emerging disease threats. Through cross-country collaboration, we build local expertise, share methodologies, and empower national programs to respond effectively.

Translation to Policy & Practice

We believe in translating research into action. By engaging closely with policymakers and partners, we ensure our findings are turned into operational guidance, stronger surveillance, and evidence-based policy.
